Parks superintendent details spring projects; DNR to support lake weed work

Parks Superintendent Brian Swoboda updated the Inver Grove Heights commission on ongoing operations and upcoming projects at the Feb. 11 meeting.
Swoboda said crews are maintaining ice rinks (shaving, cleaning and flooding) and will evaluate keeping rinks open through Presidents' Day. Staff are performing winter equipment maintenance and readying mowers and other gear for spring. He said Heritage Village Park's new restrooms and mechanical rooms are planned to open in June and that staff are working with vendors to stock supplies.
On capital work, Swoboda said the Salem Hills parking lot project is scheduled to go out for bid on April 7, with construction starting May 4; however, because the parking work is tied to a separate street project, the lot work could move to September. "It could happen in May or it could happen in September," he said.
Swoboda said he has been developing a tree preservation fund to cover tree-related needs, including invasive removals. He also reported that he has "got confirmation that the Minnesota DNR, Fisheries Group is gonna has committed funding, to help us pay for, some weed harvesting there and herbicide treatment" at Simley Island and Gun Club Lake; he said the city will share details once terms are finalized.
A commissioner asked whether the Salem Hills project covers the access road and both lots; Swoboda clarified recent paving covered much of the road and the project will reconfigure both sides of the lot to add about eight or nine parking spaces.
Swoboda said staff will keep the commission apprised as bids, schedules and final funding arrangements are confirmed.
