Commission backs option 3 for Sleepy Hollow playground, asks council to consider shade if budget allows

The Inver Grove Heights Parks and Recreation Commission voted to recommend that the City Council purchase playground equipment for Sleepy Hollow Park using the plan identified as option 3, with contingencies tied to shade and budget.

Parks and Recreation Director Adam Wallace described option 3 as "a 2 to 5 year old exclusive play area, a 5 to 12 year old exclusive play area, some climbing features, monkey bars, 4 swings," and said staff and commissioners had selected color option 1 during an earlier work session. Wallace said the recommendation to council should include adding one or two shade structures if cost allows, but that the commission would defer to option 4 (similar features with at least one shade structure and a slightly less robust 2–5 age play area) if the project exceeded a reasonable budget.

Chair entertained a motion to forward the recommendation to council; Commissioner Sandy Christiansen moved the motion and it was seconded. The commission approved the recommendation by voice vote with no recorded opposition. The chair summarized the motion as: select playground replacement option number 3 with color option 1; add one to two shade structures if budget allows; if not, recommend option 4 to preserve shade and similar features.

Staff will prepare the recommendation memo and associated procurement materials for city council consideration; commissioners asked staff to pursue cost estimates that include shade options so council can evaluate tradeoffs before final purchase decisions.
