Lakewood council authorizes LAC to research nature-based solutions after presentation

Members of the Lakewood Advisory Commission outlined a broad agenda for researching "nature-based solutions" using natural systems such as wetlands, native plantings and urban trees to reduce flooding, cut water and pesticide use, and boost biodiversity. A presenter for the LAC said the work would survey what Lakewood already does, identify gaps and look at successful examples from neighboring cities.

Council members pressed the commission to clarify scope and prioritization. Councilor Ryan said the commission's memo and the city's comprehensive plan (principal 5: sustainability and climate action) gave useful alignment but suggested narrowing the initial project to items most likely to produce near-term, implementable results on city property.

Mayor Pro Tem Sharizai and other councilors discussed process: whether the LAC research should return first to the full council or go directly to the sustainability ad hoc committee. City staff described the ordinance process for converting the ad hoc sustainability committee into a permanent body and explained the intended path for LAC recommendations.

Councilor Iacruz moved to authorize the LAC sustainability subcommittee to research nature-based solutions and bring recommendations forward; the motion was seconded and carried 10-0. The council directed the LAC to coordinate with the sustainability committee and to prioritize recommendations that are feasible for city properties while also identifying opportunities to support private-property actions by residents.

The approval authorizes research only; final policy or budget choices will return to the council for consideration.
