Volunteer league directors told the Madison City Parks Board the department has seen rapid growth in youth participation and outlined plans for the upcoming season.
Zach Jones, one of two volunteer directors introduced by the superintendent, said the program grew from about 50 participants last year to 260 this year after outreach to nearby communities and schools. "Last year, we had 50 kids in the parks department. And this year, we're at 260," Jones said.
Jones described community fundraising to purchase upgraded uniforms and said the parks department is coordinating with surrounding schools and the Boys and Girls Club for T-ball and other programs. Board members discussed opening-day timing and activities; directors said the bulk of games will begin May 14, though some early travel games are scheduled. Directors and board members floated ideas for fireworks and inviting the mayor to throw a ceremonial first pitch.
Why it matters: The growth increases demand for field maintenance, scheduling and staffing, and presents revenue and sponsorship opportunities. Directors said bringing tournament play back to Rucker could generate entry fees and local spending.
Next steps: Directors will finalize opening-day plans, pursue sponsorships and coordinate logistics with staff for PA/announcements and volunteer support.
