The commissioners appointed Jay Aaron DeLaughter to serve as Liberty County’s director of veteran services following the interview committee’s unanimous recommendation.
Catherine (staff) said the committee reviewed about 15 candidates and cited DeLaughter’s military service and experience with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in claims work and grant writing. DeLaughter told the court he served 11 years in the Marine Corps as an infantry sergeant and that he has helped veterans secure federal benefits, saying he had “secured over $500,000,000 a year federal benefits for veterans” in prior roles and expressed interest in bringing grant-writing capacity to the county’s veteran services.
Commissioners praised his stated mission and unanimously approved the appointment.
The appointment is effective immediately; staff will proceed with onboarding and integrate DeLaughter into county veteran-services operations.
