The Village of Hortonville board on March 19 authorized the local Historical Society to undertake repairs and renovations to the wooden gazebo in Veterans Park, following a public comment from the society and a staff report about safety concerns.
Claire Abbotts, who identified herself as the Historical Society secretary, told the board the group would like to take on the gazebo as a refurbishment project because of its local history and because the society raised funds to build the structure originally. "They are willing to try to refurbish it, at their own expense," Abbotts said.
Trustees and staff agreed the structure shows deterioration and asked for safety precautions during evaluation and repair. The board discussed interim steps such as blocking off the structure with caution tape and completing a safety inspection before work begins. One trustee noted the society's interest and recommended the village coordinate legal and safety sign-offs to minimize liability.
The board voted by roll call to allow the Historical Society to move forward with repairs and renovations, with staff to confirm legal arrangements and an inspection plan.
Next steps: staff will document safety requirements, verify insurance or release language is in place, and coordinate with the Historical Society on a schedule for the work.
