Commissioners hear jail construction update; move into executive session for contracts and personnel

A commissioner updated the board on the county jail construction during the March 17 meeting, reporting that the facade is largely in place on Parts A and B and that steel erection is underway. "If you drive by the jail site, you can't really see because the facade's pretty much up now ... a lot of steel columns, horizontal piece horizontal steel beams and bar joists going in," the commissioner said.
The board discussed plans to visit a precast facility to review castings for Area C, the section that will house the sheriff’s office, and noted that the project had withstood recent windstorms without major damage.
Following the update, a commissioner requested an executive session for contractual and personnel issues related to county business. The board moved to adjourn and enter executive session (motion by Commissioner Johnson, second by Commissioner McElhaney). One commissioner registered an objection on the record, but the motion carried and the board recessed into executive session.
No formal actions or votes on the jail project were reported in open session; the board indicated the executive session would address contractual and personnel items related to that and other county matters.
