Superintendent praises staffing progress, outlines budget timetable; student reps press for sports and study halls

Hummer praised achievements recognized during the Awards of Excellence and acknowledged recent hiring efforts that have helped some departments approach full staffing. He told the board to expect the Board of Supervisors' public hearing on the budget on March 25, board of supervisors action on April 8, an FCPS budget work session April 14, and a tentative school-board adoption on April 21.
Student representatives Gavin Flynn and Isabella Collegeman reported on the first student advisory meeting and listed priorities they plan to research and advocate for: elementary-level sports to build teamwork and physical fitness, study halls for elementary and middle grades, updating oversized or inappropriate physical-education equipment, expanding language opportunities and electives, and improving after‑school transportation so students can access extracurriculars more equitably. Collegeman said the student reps are developing a social-media platform to share board updates and engage peers.
Jeff Landy, chair of the School Health Advisory Committee, described a 'move more' initiative focused on school-level run clubs, the concept of a daily-movement option for students, and outreach to recruit staff sponsors so programs can scale without adding burdensome district-wide surveys.
The board praised the student reports and several members encouraged continued dialogue about program feasibility and staffing needs.
