Mesquite arts commission approves poet-laureate program, brochure revisions and new statue; First Fridays and power-box wraps get attention

The Mesquite Public Arts Commission on Nov. 17 approved a Mesquite Poet Laureate program including a junior laureate, signed off on revised public-art brochures and formally accepted a statue proposed through a MORF grant, while spending much of the meeting addressing First Fridays logistics and the condition of public power-box wraps.

The poet-laureate plan was proposed by Commissioner Steve, who said the city should emulate nearby programs and include both an adult laureate and a junior laureate with a small scholarship for the youth position. "I was thinking that we should since Goldfield has a poet laureate, we should have a poet laureate," Steve said, adding the laureates would "represent Mesquite or Virgin Valley" at events and that the positions would be unpaid. Steve moved the motion to create the program; the chair seconded and the motion passed by voice vote (tally not specified).

Why it matters: commissioners said a poet laureate could raise the community profile at arts events across the state and help connect local poets with regional audiences and opportunities.

Commissioners also approved edits to an impact brochure intended for distribution at First Friday events, agreeing to a print run (about 250 copies) so the commission can hand out materials that tell residents and visitors what MPAC does. "It would be really nice to have [brochures] for First Friday to hand out," the chair said before the commission approved the revisions by voice vote.

Community piano and First Fridays operations

The commission heard an update on moving a community piano to the Mesquite Fine Arts Center pavilion. The chair reported the commission submitted a $1,000 request to move the instrument and said Marco and Julie took the item to tech review; the chair will attend the council meeting the following night to answer questions.

Much of the meeting focused on First Friday programming and logistics after several vendors and two food trucks canceled shortly before the event. Mitsy, who reported on the Jimmy Hughes campus event, said organizers lacked enough volunteers for setup and tear-down, and that some vendors pulled out because they couldn’t staff tables. "We need to have help to set up," Mitsy said, and added she had "reached out to Judge Toon to see if I could get some community-service workers." Organizers scrambled on short notice: the theater provided food, Ace donated a bounce house for the kids zone, and entertainment on the patio (Delta Strait) drew attendees despite lighting and placement challenges.

Commissioners discussed strategies to increase attendance and ease logistics, including: securing food trucks near vendor rows, publishing schedules and maps (with a "you are here" marker), adding timed features or demonstrations at specific locations, and improving lighting for the walk between venues. Bonnie emphasized the importance of being physically present to greet vendors and attendees and noted that some vendors still want to return. Commissioners asked the First Fridays committee to continue work on marketing, logistics and site layouts.

America250 mural opportunity

The commission discussed outreach from the Nevada Arts Council about America250 anniversary grants. The council can provide an artist and funds for a mural; the commission was asked to submit concepts showing Mesquite's past, present and future and to identify potential building walls. The chair asked commissioners to send ideas within about a week.

Power-box wraps: condition assessment and grant request

Commissioners reported a survey of public power-box wraps showed many beginning to crack, peel and fade. Bonnie said the team located 14 wrapped boxes and recommended addressing the worst sides first. The commission plans to apply for a $5,200 Main Street grant to replace or re-cover the most damaged faces; one estimate cited during the meeting put replacement at about $1,300 per side. The chair said the group will check Clark County records and consult MORF's treasurer to determine who originally paid for or owns each wrap, because ownership affects responsibility for repairs.

Statue acceptance and governance notes

The commission voted to accept a statue proposed through a MORF grant (identified in the meeting as a "Love of the Game" statue). A commissioner moved to accept the piece; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote (tally not specified). During reports the chair announced plans to step down as chair at the end of the year but said they intend to remain on the commission; commissioners also discussed quorum availability for a proposed Dec. 15 meeting.

What’s next: commissioners will refine the poet-laureate program and return a draft to the commission, pursue the Main Street grant for wraps, collect mural/wall ideas for the Nevada Arts Council, continue First Fridays planning (marketing, volunteer staffing and lighting), and the chair will represent the commission at the council's tech-review meeting about the community piano.
