Mesquite council schedules election for mayor pro tem at next meeting

Councilmembers agreed on Feb. 3 to add an item to the next council meeting to elect a mayor pro tem, after the mayor raised the possibility and members reviewed the charter language regarding the position.
"The charter just says the city council shall elect of 1 of its members to be mayor pro tem," Councilman Adam said during discussion of how the council might proceed. Council members discussed whether additional code provisions were necessary and opted to schedule the election for the next meeting.
Councilman Ennis formally moved that the council elect a mayor pro tem at the next meeting; Councilwoman Filton seconded and the mayor called the vote. The transcript records ayes being noted and the council moved on after the vote.
The scheduling of the election creates a procedural opportunity for council members to nominate a colleague and for the council to decide whether to keep the current informal practice or adopt further procedural code changes. No candidate names were discussed during the Feb. 3 discussion; the item will appear on the upcoming meeting agenda for formal consideration.
