Mesquite schedules full closure at Riverside and Mesquite Boulevard for milling and paving; ribbon cutting set for new animal shelter

Travis, a city staff member, told the City of Mesquite technical review meeting on Feb. 3 that crews will completely close the intersection of Riverside and Mesquite Boulevard starting Sunday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. to mill and repave the intersection and that the closure is expected to last through about 1 p.m. Monday.

"Sunday night, the intersection of Mesquite Boulevard and Riverside will be shut down until Monday at 1PM," Travis said, adding that alternate routes and traffic-control detours will be posted and HOAs and water districts have been notified.

Travis said paving crews aim to begin paving early in the morning once base temperatures meet operational standards. "For the asphalt, anything 3 inch and thicker is 40 degrees. If it's less than that, it has to be 45 degrees and rising," he said, noting that if conditions allow, outside lanes may be reopened before the 1 p.m. estimate.

He also updated the council on related construction: the traffic signal work is largely complete and will be placed into full operation after a brief flash-mode test, the concrete slab for the fire station's aft bay was poured, and work on the animal shelter is finishing. The council was told a ribbon-cutting for the animal shelter is expected Thursday, March 5; staff said the date will be finalized.

Travis flagged a scheduling impact from a strike involving Teamsters at Rinker Concrete, which supplies precast concrete boxes, and said the city has adjusted sequencing to minimize disruptions.

The city urged residents to follow posted detours for the closure and to expect temporary traffic changes while crews complete paving operations. The council had no further action at the meeting; the road work and ribbon-cutting schedule will proceed under the city’s construction and communications plan.
