Westonka board hears construction progress; gym demolition set for March 23, track access to be limited

The construction presenter (Presenter (S4)) told the board that fireproofing, mechanical rough-ins, framed interior walls and sheetrock are complete in many areas, and that roofing and slabs have been poured. "The sheetrock is installed. The roofing is done, and the slabs are have been poured," the presenter said, adding that media center ceiling work, lighting, paint and carpet installations are underway and some mechanical and electrical finishes remain.
The presenter said the gym demolition will begin on March 23 and described ongoing site work: a new job trailer at the front of the site, planned demolition of the tennis courts, clearing around the stadium and tree removal. He cautioned that weather and frost conditions have affected staging and sequencing.
Board members asked about access to athletic facilities during construction. The superintendent (Superintendent (S3)) and presenter said limited access remains for some activities now, but that access will end once demolition begins. To maintain practice schedules, coaches are arranging alternatives including bussing athletes to a neighboring district and using the WACC for field drills. "For us to be able to offer track next spring, we needed to start right away," the superintendent said, adding that coaches have found alternative ways to keep student-athletes prepared.
Board members discussed scheduling a site tour after spring break so trustees can review finished and near-finished spaces. The superintendent and construction representative noted that some areas will be turned over as they are completed and that the district will coordinate event logistics (graduation and end-of-year activities) around the construction timeline.
The board did not take action on construction items at this meeting; staff said they will continue to provide monthly updates and set a tour for trustees after spring break.
The next construction update is expected at a future board meeting; board members expressed appreciation for the work and for contractor coordination while school activities continue.
