Following a presentation from the FIFA host committee and a lengthy exchange about written deliverables, the Broward County Commission voted to invest $2 million in World Cup sponsorship funded with tourist development tax funds; an amendment to condition funding on enumerated deliverables failed.
The Broward County Commission voted to authorize a $2 million tourism sponsorship for the FIFA World Cup 2026 after a lengthy presentation and debate over expected deliverables and how county benefits will be measured.
Alina Hudak (S12), president and CEO of the host committee, asked the board to partner regionally and detailed projected room‑night commitments, volunteer recruitment and fan activations. Hudak said FIFA has already contracted thousands of room nights and that host‑committee programming would include fan activations, volunteer training, marketing and legacy investments in local practice facilities.
Several commissioners pressed for specific written deliverables and for guarantees that Broward communities and municipalities would see direct benefits. In response, county attorney (S5) said the motion before the board authorized a fixed $2,000,000 and delegated negotiation of specific deliverables to the county administrator during execution of the sponsorship agreement; an amendment offered to make the payment conditional on enumerated deliverables failed on a board vote.
Supporters argued the regionwide economic impact—and the fact that June and July are low tourist months—justified participation; critics urged stronger written commitments and more time to negotiate terms. Vice Mayor McKenzie and other proponents said being a strategic sponsor would let Broward capture marketing and room‑night benefits.
The board approved the full $2,000,000 sponsorship on a recorded vote of 8–0 (one commissioner absent). Administration was asked to negotiate deliverables and to return with updates. The funds will be drawn from tourist development tax (bed tax) revenues.
