Three North Syracuse teachers chosen for NSF‑linked fellowship with University of Rochester and Micron

Nick Scholes, the district director of STEM, told the board that three district teachers were accepted into a competitive fellowship run by the University of Rochester in partnership with the National Science Foundation and industry partners, including Micron.
Scholes said the program will recognize 10 teachers in the Syracuse area and 10 in Boise, Idaho, who will form a 20-teacher cohort that exchanges visits and collaborates over a five-year commitment. "All 3 of our teachers were accepted for this fellowship," Scholes said. He named the teachers as Elena Capria (high school math, AP Statistics and precalculus), Alexis Williams (a traveling technology teacher) and Julie Sciova (a junior high teacher).
The fellowship includes graduate credit hours, cohort work with University of Rochester faculty, and an opportunity for Syracuse-area fellows to visit Micron’s facilities in Boise; the Boise fellows will make a reciprocal visit in subsequent years. Scholes described the fellowship as part of the district’s effort to expand teacher leadership, STEM pathways and industry connections.
The board applauded the teachers and the district’s partnership with the University of Rochester.
