Urbana opens community services grant cycle; staff notes CHDO funding with Habitat approved by council

City staff told the Community Development Commission on Feb. 26, 2026 that the community services grant application cycle opened in early February and that interested nonprofits and public entities should submit applications by April 6 at 5 p.m.
Interim grants division manager Nick Olson said the community services grants support local programs benefiting low‑income Urbana residents across eligible service areas and that the city released a press announcement; staff will distribute application materials and asked commissioners to share the flyer and survey in their networks. Olson said information and application materials are available on the city website.
Olson also reported that CHDO (Community Housing Development Organization) funding agreements with Habitat for Humanity were taken to city council and unanimously approved since the last commission meeting; staff characterized the decision as advancing affordable housing development under the HOME program. Additionally, Olson provided a staffing update: an interim grants manager is in place, the manager role is being recruited, and a staff member named Eric is acclimating to the division.
Commission business then proceeded to routine items; minutes from the Jan. 27 meeting were approved by voice vote and the meeting was adjourned.
