Richfield council backs Metro Transit's plan to route K Line on Nicollet Avenue

Metro Transit planning staff briefed the Richfield City Council on March 10 about its Arterial Bus Rapid Transit update and recommended routing the future K Line on Nicollet Avenue through Richfield. The council voted to adopt a resolution of support for the Nicollet alignment.
Arterial BRT planning manager Kyle O'Donnell Burrows described the multi'step evaluation used to identify corridors, saying the Nicollet Avenue corridor scored highest in the technical screening and readiness process. "Nicollet Avenue is recommended as the K Line," Burrows said, and he outlined next steps including submitting the line for the regional solicitation and beginning project planning in 2027.
Council Member Hayford O'Leary urged Metro Transit to consider a south terminus at the American Boulevard Orange Line station to reduce transfers for riders, and transportation engineer Matt Hardiger explained the Nicollet reconstruction south of 66th Street is planned this summer and that space was left in the design to accommodate future BRT platforms.
Council moved, seconded and approved a resolution of support for Metro Transit's recommendation by voice vote. The vote authorizes staff to provide a municipal-resolution of support to the Metropolitan Council as part of Metro Transit's process; formal project-level decisions (station placement and platform construction) will come during later planning phases.
