Triangle Junction mural call draws 21 applications; finalists to be juried and paid honorarium

Staff told the Arts Commission that the Triangle Junction mural call closed with 21 applications and described the planned selection process.
"We received 21 applications," the staff member said, adding that three commissioners (AC, Hillary and Holly) will act as jurors and use a rubric to score submissions. Jurors will review applications during a one‑week scoring period and then invite finalists to create proposed artwork for the site.
Each invited finalist will receive a $100 honorarium to develop their proposed work, staff said. The jurors and staff will reconvene on March 26 to score finalists and forward recommendations to the Arts Commission at the April meeting. If timelines hold, staff said contracting could begin after the April meeting and artists would have a couple of months to complete installations, with a target completion of June 11, weather permitting, to coincide with visitor traffic around the World Cup.
Commissioners discussed possible on‑site activations such as pop‑up shops, food trucks and picnic tables during summer months to support the mural activation and noted intent to use the panels to draw visitors to downtown.
The commission expects to review juror recommendations in April and proceed with contracting and site preparations as weather and schedules allow.
