Board approves student trips, cafeteria tables and consent items; baseball trip has one abstention

The Southgate Community School District board approved several routine and student‑activity items during its March 10 regular meeting, including authorization for student travel and facility purchases.
The board approved a request for Anderson High School’s varsity baseball team to travel to Escanaba, Michigan, for interscholastic competition; expenses will be covered from the varsity baseball account. The motion passed with one abstention by Mr. Green, who had stated he would abstain "as per the agreement." The presenter said the trip is part of a semi‑annual exchange and gives students exposure to high‑level out‑of‑region competition.
The board also approved the Anderson Winter Guard’s trip to the WGI World Championships, with staff noting the group qualified after regional competition and that costs will be covered by the band boosters, fundraising and participation fees; the event dates were given as April 8–11, 2026.
On facilities, Food Service Director Mark Rodriguez recommended purchasing new cafeteria tables after the district’s RFP produced seven bids and two vendors met specifications; staff recommended Interior Environments based on seating capacity and layout and said the purchase will come from food service funds and includes a 13‑year labor and material warranty. The motion passed.
Earlier on the agenda, the consent agenda (minutes, HR update, February disbursements) was approved by voice vote. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn by Mr. Green.
