Council approves property conveyance ordinance for Bethel Fire Station and advances Racetrack Road project

Sumter County Council approved two property-related items during its March meeting: a second-reading ordinance to clear title on a former fire station parcel and a second-reading rezoning for a county-owned Racetrack Road parcel intended for economic development.
County staff explained the Bethel Fire Station matter: when parcels A, B and C were deeded to the county for fire equipment use, a reverter clause meant title could return to private owners if the county stopped using the property for that purpose. Staff said the county no longer owns parcels B and C, leaving a 0.18-acre sliver with limited independent value. Staff recommended a quitclaim deed to convey the remnant and simplify ownership so the building could remain intact. Council approved second reading of Ordinance 26-10-40 to authorize that conveyance.
On Racetrack Road (RZ 2323), staff said the parcel had been acquired for economic development and that the Army Corps of Engineers recently provided a wetland delineation clarifying jurisdictional areas. After completing due diligence, staff presented the property for second reading and council approved the measure to advance the project.
Both items passed by voice vote and will proceed with the administrative steps required for property conveyance and any development-related approvals.
