Brookings board approves high-school science-area renovation and roof work; district finalizing scope and cost

The Brookings School District approved construction work to renovate the high school science area, including plumbing, bathrooms and roof repairs, Superintendent Summer Schultz told Brookings Radio, and the project is slated to begin this spring.
"We were able to, approve the construction to begin here in the spring," Schultz said, describing long-planned updates to science classrooms and related infrastructure. She said the work will include roofing and plumbing upgrades in the science/bathroom area and that some construction activity will occur in the building this spring without intrusive demolition.
The district weighed whether to begin demolition in spring — which would be more disruptive to students — or delay demolition to avoid spring disruption and accept that some classes would be displaced for about the first quarter of the 2026-27 school year. "There's work happening in the building this spring, but it won't be demolition intrusive," Schultz said; she added the district expects to find temporary spaces for displaced classes.
Schultz said the board received a low bid from local firm Mills Construction, which allowed the district to include additional roof work in the project. On the overall price tag she said, "It came in at $2.2.0.5, I believe," and then explained the board is still deciding which alternates to include and whether to handle some items outside the contract; she said the district is finalizing the exact final number.
In addition to the science-area work, Schultz said the board approved larger roof replacements at the high school and at the CTE building to prevent leaks and coordinate infrastructure updates with the renovation. "We will be able to take a big area that is really in need of repairs at the high school and add that to this project," she said.
Schultz said the district hopes students will be using the updated science spaces by the second quarter of the next school year, but cautioned that hidden issues common in older buildings can delay work.
