Commission outlines invasive removals, bat-season limits and arboretum plans

Staff reported the commission removed roughly 70 invasive pear trees in pockets around the city last year and identified an area with approximately 57 pairs for additional removals. "We're into our bat exclusion window, April 1 through October 31," Staff member said, and the commission agreed not to remove trees along riparian corridors greater than 3 inches in diameter during that period.
Members also discussed the Meadows (off Pittsburgh Avenue), where understory invasive species will be cleared to restore meadow habitat used as a community Fourth of July viewing area. Staff said three dead or dying trees at the site would likely require a separate purchase order and formal quotes before removal.
At Inera Foundation Park (Nelano Field of Discovery), staff described plans to add 20–25 quaking aspens in a group, several hickories and additional pawpaws, expand native pollinator plantings, and set up interpretive exhibits with local artists. Staff said the commission would take on routine maintenance now that city resources are available.
Next steps: staff will draft resident outreach letters for neighborhoods targeted for removals, request quotes for Meadows tree removals and the specific dead trees in the park area, and coordinate timing to avoid the bat exclusion window.
