Summary
The Shade Tree Commission reported near-complete progress on its TCP planting program, updates on partner-donated trees and plaques, plans for Tree City recognition, and an April 24 Arbor Day event featuring a mayoral proclamation and student activities.
The city's Shade Tree Commission reported steady progress on neighborhood plantings and outlined logistics for upcoming awards and community events.
Chair said Brian Wade has been planting under the TCP program and that most sites are complete except for "four or five" outstanding locations. The commission identified specific addresses requiring follow-up, including a backyard alley planting at 201 North Harrison Street where members decided a small tree could be placed.
The commission also discussed a corporate donation of six trees through an "America 250" initiative. Chair said the donor discussed granite plaques and that markers were estimated at about $250 apiece; Olivia was identified as the contact to confirm wording and plaque design. "One of the trees we're definitely gonna put a plaque on," the Chair said.
Presenter credited a partner group (VCU) and volunteers for recent plantings along the river and reported a separate initiative to plant nearly 2,000 pawpaw seeds to aid bank restoration. "We planted just shy of 2,000 pawpaw seeds along the river," the Presenter said, adding that earlier rounds produced an estimated 100 to 200 seedlings.
The commission confirmed Tree City recognition activities: the Tree City awards ceremony is scheduled for May 6 in Springfield, Ohio. Chair said the commission has qualified for the Tree City award (30th year) and a growth award and that members needed to decide soon whether to attend.
Arbor Day will be April 24 at 10 a.m. at the Salvation Army. Chair said the mayor will read a proclamation, Captain Christine will read a book to students, and students will participate in art projects and help mulch the planted tree.
Next steps: staff will follow up on outstanding planting addresses, coordinate plaque wording with Olivia, confirm the donor's tree delivery schedule and reassess bag inventories after initial watering deployments.
