Village and Park District representatives and residents used a community presentation to spotlight Gurnee’s parks, youth programming and business partnerships, and to describe ongoing planning for the long-running Gurnee Days festival.
A village official said the event and the community ‘‘are really a community of opportunity to the people that live here and the visitors that come here as well,’’ framing parks and local festivals as central to the village’s quality of life.
The presentation underscored why local leaders and residents consider parks and events important. Officials described new subdivisions that have added parks, Park District-led programming designed to engage children and families, and regular neighborhood outreach such as block parties that keep police, fire and village personnel connected to residents.
A Park District official highlighted youth involvement, saying, ‘‘Real and genuine young people actually make a make a change and difference in their local community,’’ and described staff and the Park District board as responsive to community-driven programming. Officials said outreach and educational programs ‘‘draw people in’’ and aim to make each experience at park events ‘‘a bit of fun.’’
Speakers also emphasized the village’s business ecosystem. A village official noted that Six Flags, Gurnee Mills and Great Wolf have been partners in the community and called the local business climate ‘‘flourishing,’’ adding that many businesses continue to choose and expand in Gurnee.
Planning for Gurnee Days, a community celebration the village said has been held for more than 50 years, was described as a joint undertaking between the village and the Park District. Officials said the multi-day festival is designed to offer ‘‘something for everybody’’ and to bring ‘‘friends, family, and community to just come together and celebrate the year.’’
No formal actions or policy decisions were recorded during the presentation. Speakers framed the remarks as descriptions of programming, partnerships and community outreach; next steps for events and programs were not specified at the session’s close.
