County staff announced a public wildfire-preparedness workshop for April 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the 4-H Building. The free event will offer briefings from the sheriff, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service, provide checklists for home hardening, and include opportunities to sign up for the county's reverse-9-1-1 notification system. Staff said the session is intended as a "one-stop shop" for residents preparing for wildfire season and that the county will schedule a similar session in Rangely.
The announcement followed the board's discussion and decision to request an extension from the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control on adopting the state's wildland-urban interface (WUI) code; commissioners said additional outreach and stakeholder engagement are part of the county's next steps.
