Berlin High academic decathlon finishes second at state; individual qualifies for nationals

Berlin High School's academic decathlon team returned to the school board on April 2 after placing second in the state division, a result the team's adviser described as the highest placement in recent years.
Nick Wong, the team adviser and a high school science teacher, told the board the team competed across seven written tests and performance events including speech, interview and essay. Student Thomas McCarthy summarized the format and results, saying the team placed second overall at the state competition and noting individual accomplishments: "Tati got third place in the interview. She also got third place in the essay." McCarthy said another student "got first place in your interview" and that one student qualified for nationals in Garden Grove, California.
Board members asked logistical questions about travel and chaperones; Wong said staff and coaches were coordinating who would accompany students and working out ratios and expenses. The board praised the students and adviser for their achievement and noted the breadth of student involvement in academics, athletics and arts.
The district said it will finalize travel and chaperone details and work through scheduling conflicts so students can attend state and national events when qualified.
