Amanda Nolan, the city's infrastructure communications specialist, encouraged residents to apply for the fourth annual Public Works and Utilities Citizens Academy, a seven-session course that runs Monday nights from April 6 to May 18 with sessions starting at 5:30 p.m. Applicants must be 18 and Topeka residents and are asked to attend at least five of the seven sessions. Nolan said application links will be posted to the city's Facebook page and topeka.gov.
"This is a really interactive academy," Nolan said, describing tours of the water treatment plant and wastewater facilities, behind-the-scenes sessions at the sign shop and budget discussions.
Eric Culberson, a community liaison with Scent Topeka, described the nonprofit's "Beat the Heat" fundraiser with a $15,000 goal to buy more than 100 energy-rated window units that volunteers will distribute in May, selling units to qualifying households for $50 each and limiting one unit per household.
Culberson also announced a noise-free drone show planned for June 27 to mark the nation's 250th anniversary. He said the event is expected to draw more than 2,000 guests, will need about 105 volunteers and will feature vendors and family activities; volunteer and donation information was provided at centapica.com.
Both announcements aim to expand resident engagement with city services and community nonprofits ahead of summer events.
