Alvin ISD holds public hearing on annual report; board hears praise for campus staff

Alvin Independent School District trustees opened a public hearing on the district's annual report and were told the compiled report is available online and in print at campuses and libraries this week.
The superintendent's staff explained that Texas Education Code section 39.306 requires publication of the annual report, which compiles eight sections of district data, including the Texas Academic Performance Report (TAPR), 23-24 PEIMS financials, accreditation information, campus performance objectives, discipline reporting under the Every Student Success Act, first-year college performance, progress on House Bill 3 goals, and a TAPR glossary produced by the Texas Education Agency. The presenter noted that most material in the packet covers prior school years and is not operationally current.
Trustees asked staff to clarify limits of the college-tracking data: the Texas Higher Education Board links students using a statewide SIS identifier, so out-of-state or certain private college enrollments may not appear in that measure. The presenter said abbreviated copies provided to trustees were about 237 pages, with a comprehensive 265-page version online that includes campus-level TAPR and PEIMS financials.
During superintendent's remarks, the board recognized district achievements: Alvin ISD earned the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 13th consecutive year and a meritorious budget award; Shadow Creek High School's girls basketball team advanced to the state semifinals; and district students won 91 art awards, including 17 Gold Key recipients advancing to a national competition. The superintendent also mentioned upcoming events including a district job fair and the spring PTO expo.
In public comment, Suzanne Willoughby, a parent and educator whose child attends EC Mason Elementary, praised Principal Miss Watts and staff for proactive outreach and for coordinating IEP and counseling supports that helped her son transition smoothly. Willoughby said staff 'went above and beyond' to arrange a pre-start tour, coordinate teachers on the IEP and respond promptly when scheduling issues arose.
The hearing concluded and the board proceeded to the regular meeting and consent agenda.
