Eighth-grade career fair highlighted and teachers of the year honored

Spearfish middle school staff described an eighth-grade career fair that gave students hands-on exposure to career fields and community professionals, and the board recognized building and district teachers of the year.
A district presenter introduced the career fair’s goals—leadership, academic rigor, career exploration and high-school transition—and said the program used a grant to fund busing to a larger regional event. Miss Lukin, introduced as a middle school health and PE teacher and head softball coach, said students chose two career fields, completed preparatory worksheets and asked their own questions to professionals. "We had probably between close to, maybe 40 individuals who came out and volunteered their time," she said.
Board members asked a few logistical questions and thanked staff. The board also recognized building teachers of the year and announced the district teacher of the year; the district award includes an extra $1,000, and each building teacher receives $250. Names mentioned by the presenter included Denise Nappadall, Betsy Corson and Danielle Lightenberg.
The board recorded no further action on the career-fair item; staff said they plan to continue hosting the event for eighth graders.
