Storey County directs staff to explore expedited Patrick Interchange improvements with Tesla and NDOT

Storey County commissioners on March 17 authorized county staff to engage Tesla, the Nevada Department of Transportation and other stakeholders to develop a draft plan for possible expedited expansion and improvement of the Patrick Interchange on Interstate 80, which serves the Tahoe‑Reno Industrial Center.
County manager Austin Osborne described recurring traffic congestion near the interchange and said staff and traffic engineers have identified possible measures that could substantially reduce commute times under normal conditions. He asked for authorization to pursue discussions and potential local agreements with private and state partners and to return with a fiscal note and recommendations.
Commissioners voted unanimously to direct staff to pursue those discussions and prepare and present findings to the board at a future meeting. The board did not authorize any expenditure at this meeting; staff said they would return with estimated costs and a recommended path forward.
Why it matters: the Tahoe‑Reno Industrial Center is a major employment center for the region; interchange work could reduce commute times and address recurring congestion but may require coordination with NDOT, private partners and funding commitments.
