Commissioners approve $23,100 bridge evaluations for three Vigo County bridges

Vigo County commissioners on March 26 approved Task Order No. 1, a $23,100 assignment under a professional services agreement with SJCA to evaluate three county bridges and produce rehabilitation recommendations. Highway department official Robbins said the work will help the county plan repairs before conditions worsen.
Robbins told the board the county’s biennial inspections, performed by VES to meet federal standards, flagged several structures that need closer study. The task order will evaluate Bridge 194 (Rosedale Road over Otter Creek), Bridge 201 (Baldwin Street over the North Branch of Otter Creek) and Bridge 325 (Fort Harrison Road over CSX and the Indiana Railroad at 35th Street) and provide recommendations for rehabbing approaches, bearing plates and other components.
The county-wide inspections cover more than 200 bridges, Robbins said, and this targeted analysis is intended to prioritize maintenance on higher‑use crossings. Commissioners moved and approved the task order during the meeting; no dissent was recorded.
The evaluation is a preliminary planning step: Robbins said SJCA will deliver findings and recommendations to assist county staff in budgeting and scheduling rehabilitation work. The county did not specify a schedule for the evaluation in the meeting.
