Manhasset board discusses state universal pre-K proposal; officials say program unlikely for next year

Rebecca (S5) reported the district has convened pre-K providers and a collegial circle to discuss flow-through funding options; she said the average local cost per pre-K child in the area is "12 to 16,000 per year. So $10,000, the sticking point is with the state is if you accept state funding, you cannot charge families more money." Rebecca added the district will meet with partners on April 22 to discuss interest and feasibility.
Board member Nadia (S9) expressed concern that even with state funding the program could still impose costs on the district's budget and that bringing a new cohort could compete with resources for current students. Other members encouraged further engagement with providers and emphasized the potential community benefits of building pre-K relationships, but agreed it is unlikely the district could implement universal pre-K in the coming school year.
