Council approves permit for 30,000-gallon aboveground LPG tank; fire marshal lists safety conditions
Summary
The council unanimously approved a permit for a 30,000-gallon aboveground liquefied petroleum (propane) tank proposed by Nexio Power at 330 Northwest Stallings Drive after the fire marshal outlined required compliance with the 2024 International Fire Code and NFPA 58, and recommended an internal hydrant and vehicle-impact protection.
The City of Nacogdoches on March 17 approved a permit for Nexio Power to install a 30,000-gallon aboveground liquefied petroleum gas (propane) storage tank at 330 Northwest Stallings Drive, subject to fire-department requirements.
Fire Marshal Jody Chandler described the project's site plan and said the installation must comply with the 2024 International Fire Code and NFPA 58 (Liquefied Petroleum Gas Code). Key requirements Chandler cited included a 50-foot separation from buildings and property lines, 25-foot clearance from ignition sources, concrete noncombustible foundation, bollard protection for vehicle impact, hazard signage, security fencing, pressure testing before filling, and an internal fire hydrant on the property to improve firefighting access.
Council members asked whether the city would pay for an internal hydrant and how the tank performs in high winds; Chandler said the applicant would be required to provide the hydrant and that tanks of this type are heavy and designed to meet applicable codes. After discussion, a motion to approve the permit passed unanimously.
What happens next: The permit is approved but the firm must meet all fire-department conditions, complete pressure testing, and receive final approval from fire code officials before operating the tank.
