Kate Cannon Nguyen, park planner, explained the naming process: staff solicited 131 suggestions, removed 16 ineligible submissions under the existing naming policy (Resolution 10696), and forwarded a shortlist (Golden Vista, Jackrabbit Hill, Hawk Ridge, Sanjeevini) to the Parks & Recreation Commission. The commission voted to recommend Jackrabbit Hill Park to council, noting that several submitted names referenced jackrabbits and that the park site's hilly topography and local native wildlife supported the name.
Council members discussed whether to add a separate public poll on the shortlist; some members favored moving forward because of prior community engagement and the potential delays and staff time a new poll would require. After brief discussion and affirmation of substantial public input, a council member moved and seconded the resolution and it passed on roll call.
Staff said the name can be incorporated into park theming and design as planning proceeds and that the next step is refining the master plan and returning to the Parks & Recreation Commission and council for design approval.
The council also noted opportunities to add other shortlisted names to city naming lists for future facilities.
