Summary
The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners filled multiple advisory-board seats, approved a new off-premises beer-and-wine license for J Boys LLC and renewed two residential solid-waste franchises for Advanced Disposal and Deep South Sanitation.
The Lowndes County Board of Commissioners appointed members to several local authorities and approved routine business items during its regular session.
At the outset the board filled two seats on the Valdosta/Lowndes County Zoning Board of Appeals; after nominations and a hand vote the board appointed Travis Cox and John McCall. The board also appointed Beverly Richardson Blake to the Development Authority by acclamation and approved James Miller and Ken Overman for the Land Bank Authority; the at-large Land Bank appointment requires separate approval by the city of Valdosta. Casey Horn was selected by a 3–2 hand vote to fill a vacancy on the South Georgia Community Service Board.
Commissioners approved a new beer-and-wine (off-premises) license for J Boys LLC, to operate at 3661 Madison Highway, after staff presentation that the application was complete. The board also authorized an easement exchange for tax parcel 0134051 at the Whitewater Road and Madison Highway intersection, accepting a smaller (0.49 acre) replacement area for an existing 2.11-acre easement and authorizing the chairman to sign closing documents.
On franchise renewals, staff reported that Advanced Disposal (residential service) serves 8,410 households at $21.62 per month and that the county’s prior “not to exceed” level is $25 per month; commissioners approved the company’s renewal and authorized the chairman to sign. The board separately renewed Deep South Sanitation’s residential franchise; staff said Deep South serves about 8,637 households, charges $22 per month and $5 for an additional can. Both renewals were approved by voice vote.
Each of those items was presented by county staff and passed with little debate; where votes were recorded the board approved by voice or hand count. No amendments or conditions beyond the standard authorization to sign documents were recorded during the meeting.
What’s next: Appointees who require city concurrence must await the Valdosta council’s action; franchise agreements are effective per the terms authorized and administratively managed by county staff.
