York County commissioners discussed a request from Region 5 Systems for additional county matching funds at their March 17 meeting and voted to approve only the statutorily required match while denying the additional, discretionary contribution this year.
Staff and a board member explained that Region 5 is asking each participating county for a prorated additional match to cover growth and budget changes; the requested additional amount matched what was requested the prior year. Several commissioners said it was premature to commit to extra funding six months before the county's budget process and expressed concern about cash flow before the second half of property-tax receipts.
A motion to approve the statutory match and deny the additional match passed on a roll call. Commissioners suggested that the board could revisit any nonstatutory funding request in May if timetables require it, and one commissioner said his vote would not change between now and May.
