The Hempstead Town Board adopted a local law on March 10 to provide a 50% partial real property tax exemption for surviving spouses of police officers killed in the line of duty.
Supervisor Ferretti introduced the proposal, saying the measure is intended to "ease this economic burden" on families who lose an officer in the line of duty and noting the town would use the 50% exemption level allowed under New York state law. The board closed the public hearing on the item with no speakers and approved the ordinance by a unanimous roll-call vote.
Town Attorney cited New York Real Property Tax Law §471 as the statute permitting local adoption of a partial exemption for survivors of public safety officers killed on duty. The board recorded the vote in favor of adoption by all present board members; no abstentions or dissenting votes were recorded.
The board directed the assessor’s office and the town attorney’s office to implement the new exemption consistent with state guidance; implementation details, including application procedures and effective date, will be administered by those offices under existing town processes.
