Councilmember Shoemake read the proclamation and invited the senior‑class representative and family members to speak. The student representative described the benches as six‑foot cypress benches with memorial plaques, modeled after a historic Charleston Battery design and locally crafted by Roy's Wood Products, with support from community donors.
"On behalf of the graduating class of 2026, I am donating these two memorial benches ... to be placed at the entryway of Lugoff‑Elgin High School as a symbol of the impact that Sam and Mary Ann had on the school," the student said.
Family members offered brief remarks of gratitude. Councilmembers praised the students' initiative and expressed condolences to the families. The proclamation and the related motions were adopted unanimously by those voting.
The council opened a short photo opportunity with family and school officials after the proclamation; the benches will be installed and unveiled at the school as described by the student speaker.
