Board members heard Alt 42 Architecture’s schematics for a multi-site renovation — including entry repairs, lab upgrades, a 240-seat auditorium and athletic-field improvements — and approved payment of pre-design and schematic invoices to be reimbursed by a future bond sale.
The Jenkins Independent Board of Education on March 24 reviewed schematic designs from Alt 42 Architecture for multiple facility upgrades across the district and approved payment of the pre-design and schematic design invoice, with district leaders saying the expense will be reimbursed through a planned bond sale.
Molly, a representative of Alt 42 Architecture, presented high-level drawings that organize the work by building and identified three core scopes at the combined high school/middle school: repairs to the main entry or “front porch,” updates to two science labs, and a proposed auditorium sited in a tunnel area. “My name is Molly. I work with Alt 42 Architecture, and I’ll kind of run through the scope,” Molly said, noting the auditorium concept would provide about 240 seats and could add roughly 20 parking spaces at the chosen location.
Design details included replacing and reinforcing structural columns at the main entry, repairing exposed concrete, updating lab casework and plumbing to restore functional science spaces, and evaluating PTAC units to improve ventilation. The team also proposed resurfacing the track, updating field restrooms and locker rooms, adding canopies at drop-off zones, and addressing missing bleacher backrests at the baseball field.
District leadership described the district’s bonding capacity as strong and said the board would pay the pre-design costs from the general fund now and be reimbursed after the bond sale in the next fiscal year. “Our bonding potential is really, really good,” the district leader stated, emphasizing a phased approach to preserve capacity for future contingencies.
The board then voted to approve payment of the Alt 42 pre-design and schematic invoice. A motion to pay the bill was made and seconded and recorded with no opposition. According to the superintendent’s presentation, the costs are expected to be reimbursable once the bond sale is completed in the coming fiscal year.
Next steps include further development of the schematic drawings, more detailed cost and site work analysis, and continued updates to the board as designs are refined.
