The San Gabriel City Community Services Commission selected Vice Chair Barrantes as chair and Commissioner Rodriguez as vice chair by acclamation during its June 2 meeting and approved the minutes from the May 5 regular meeting by a 5–0 vote.
The changes came after staff explained the nomination process and opened the floor for names. Chair Duong nominated a colleague and then closed nominations; staff announced, “now chair Barrantes is selected as chair by acclamation,” and turned the meeting over to the newly selected chair to continue the session.
The nomination process was described to commissioners by Community Services Assistant Director Matthew Morales Stevens, who walked the commission through single- and multiple-candidate scenarios and the formal vote steps if needed.
On an unrelated procedural motion, a commissioner moved to approve the minutes from the Community Services Commission regular meeting of May 5, 2025; the motion was seconded and the clerk announced the result as a vote of five ayes, zero nays and zero abstentions.
Commissioners present for the vote included Commissioner Cabot, Commissioner Wong, Commissioner Rodriguez, Vice Chair Barrantes and Chair Duong. Staff confirmed the motion passed and recorded the outcome in the meeting minutes.
The leadership changes take effect immediately. The commission will use its revised membership to lead a work-plan review at the next regular meeting on July 7, where commissioners are expected to propose priorities and volunteer to lead specific projects.
