Engineers to hold April 13 community meeting on I-95/639 interchange concepts; resident raises westbound traffic concern

County staff told the committee that VITA will hold a community meeting on the interchange/study on April 13 at Lewis McClark Elementary School from 5 to 7 p.m. Staff said the latest documents from March will be available and that committee members would be emailed meeting details.
A resident who said they live about three miles from the interstate raised concerns that signalizing ramp intersections could cause delays for drivers heading west on Route 639 and suggested a potential connector behind a nearby Shell station to relieve queueing. The resident prefaced comments with "I'm not an engineer," and asked whether a connector could reduce backups that force drivers to wait at the ramp signal.
Jimmy Street and other committee members described the concepts as efforts to "tweak" the existing footprint where possible to improve ramp flow and safety without the expense of new alignment and additional right-of-way acquisition. Street noted one option considered elsewhere involved a slip ramp and that the study is weighing trade-offs between cost and traffic operations.
Staff encouraged members and interested residents to attend the April 13 meeting, where engineers will present concepts and answer technical questions.
