The Decatur SD 61 Board of Education opened its district highlights by recognizing Black History Month honorees and celebrating McArthur High's girls basketball historic season.
Presenter Maria noted Dr. Rochelle Clark was recognized earlier at a state luncheon with an Outstanding Commitment to Education award and praised district faculty and staff for their roles. "Our community is truly DPS proud to have Doctor Clark advocating for our students, staff, and families," Maria said.
The board also recognized the McArthur girls basketball team, led by coach Jadon "Coach Jay" Bryant, for an exceptional season that included back-to-back regional championships, an undefeated home record, and the program's first sectional championship. Maria singled out senior Lexi Meyer for reaching her 1,000th career point.
Coach Jay thanked the board, superintendent and the community, emphasized academics first in the program and listed team members and staff. "These young women all, season long, gave the energy and the encouragement that you guys gave them, helped make this this season historic," she said.
Why it matters: The recognitions highlight district leadership and student achievement and were used to showcase staff and community support ahead of planned public engagement on Road Map 2030.
What happens next: The team and coach were invited forward during the meeting; no board action was required.
