Yankton County receives AG grant for K‑9; "Daisy" demonstrated for commissioners

Sheriff Preston told the Yankton County Commission on March 17 that the county received a fully funded grant from the South Dakota Attorney General's Office, paid from drug forfeiture funds, to acquire and outfit a canine for law enforcement duties.
"It was 100% fully funded, grant through the AG's office," Preston said, and introduced Corporal Sculler and K‑9 Daisy. Corporal Sculler described 12 weeks of training and required annual certification; deputies reported roughly 48 incidents in which the K‑9 has been used since going into service.
During a brief demonstration the dog located a training scent very quickly. "Within 0.003 seconds, she found it," Preston said. Command staff said the canine will help investigations and searches across the county and into neighboring areas as needed.
The sheriff's office said the vehicle and all K‑9 program equipment were obtained through the grant and that the canine can be used both in patrol and detection roles; the county will continue documenting uses and certification requirements.
What happens next: the county will continue to monitor K‑9 operations, maintain annual certification, and provide periodic usage reports to the commission as requested.
