Board hears Roadmap 2030 update showing next phases, SWOT work and community input

The Decatur Public Schools board received an update on the Roadmap 2030 strategic planning process and next steps.
Jay, a staff member involved in the roadmap work, told the board the district held two community forums on March 11 at Eisenhower and McArthur high schools with about 26 community attendees. He said phase 2 work includes producing a concise strategic plan 'on a page,' creating a scorecard of key performance indicators and compiling a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) analysis based on staff and community feedback.
"By tracking that progress, it will answer the question: are we making progress and holding ourselves accountable to the strategic plan?" Jay said. He described a plan to refine suggested high-leverage strategies gathered from stakeholders and hand phase 3 deliverables to the administrative team for action planning and facilities work in phase 4.
Several board members emphasized transparency and urged residents to seek accurate information from board members and staff rather than relying on social media. One board member said they had spoken with about 200 people during the last planning process and encouraged residents to call or email the board to provide input.
Why it matters: The roadmap will guide district priorities, budgeting and facility planning. Staff said the committee will review community and staff feedback again on April 1; recommendations and final products are expected to be presented to the board for approval in May so the district can begin phases 3 and 4 over the summer.
Next steps: The roadmap committee will reconvene April 1 to review analytic themes and prepare a final recommendation for the board; the public can provide feedback through the district website's Roadmap 2030 page and FAQ.
