Board receives data on transfers and Mark Twain closure: roughly 370 requests, 10 families flagged for second move

District staff updated the board on district reorganization, transfer requests and the ongoing effects of the Mark Twain Elementary closure.

Staff reported roughly 370 transfer requests in total: 182 from employees (all approved, staff said) and 188 from families (a small fraction approved so far). Jake (student services, speaker 16) provided a breakdown of the 129 students who were enrolled at Mark Twain at the time of closure: 50 remained at the same address and thus were not displaced; 10 of those 50 had been given a written option to remain at their then‑current school or move to the newly assigned school; 12 students moved but remained at the same school assignment (moved inside the same boundary); 45 moved and are now at a different school; and 22 left the district.

Board members pressed for clearer public reporting and comparative cost/impact analyses for the reorganization and asked staff to prepare updated community‑facing documentation. Staff said they would compile and present comparative staffing, student‑impact and cost metrics at a future board meeting.

The presentation generated questions about family communications and the limits of prior assurances to families affected by the Mark Twain closure; staff emphasized that prior assurances were tied to a student’s residence at a given address and that families who later moved could be affected by boundary adjustments.

Staff will return with updated data and communications materials ahead of the next board meeting.
