Powhatan board accepts District 5 supervisor's resignation, directs special-election petition and opens interim application process

A board member announced she had submitted her resignation; the board then moved and passed a resolution that accepts the resignation effective May 15, 2026, directs the county attorney to petition the circuit court to issue a writ for a special election to fill the vacancy on Nov. 3, 2026, and directs the county administrator to create a public application process and notice (including in Powhatan Today) for qualified District 5 applicants to serve as an interim board appointee from mid-May through the November election.
The motion passed 5-0. No candidate was appointed at the March 23 meeting; the board's direction initiates the statutory special-election process and an interim appointment application period.
