The Rome Zoning Board of Appeals voted unanimously on April 1 to grant an area variance allowing Adam Ventura to construct a 40‑by‑64 pole barn at 5292 White Road.
Ventura told the board the new structure would be for storage of a tractor, boat and other vehicles; he said an existing barn on the property is failing and will be removed. He also said the proposed barn is comparable in size to other buildings on the road and would not be an eyesore when viewed from the street. Neighbor David Zocala spoke in support, saying he owns a similar 40‑by‑64 pole barn nearby and that the new structure would improve the turnaround area used by the city snowplow.
Board members reviewed the five area‑variance standards set out in the City code — potential neighborhood impact, whether the benefit can be achieved by feasible alternatives, whether the variance request is substantial, whether there would be adverse environmental/physical effects, and whether the difficulty was self‑created — and concluded the proposal met those standards given the rural setting and prevalence of similar accessory buildings.
The board approved the variance by a 5–0 vote. The owner was instructed to secure all required permits through the City of Rome Code Office before beginning work.
