Adelanto officials outline grants, road and park work including $60,000 GM safety grant application

Adelanto — During the Feb. 11 council meeting City Manager (speaker 6) reported on several operational and capital priorities, including water/wastewater oversight, audits to improve the city’s credit profile, and upcoming street and park projects.

The city manager said the city has engaged Woodard & Curran to oversee water and wastewater operations and that the firm will deliver a presentation at the council’s second March meeting. He said the finance department is making significant progress on audits that could improve the city’s credit rating and expand access to grants.

Staff has identified and will apply this week for a $60,000 General Motors "On Main Street" grant to address chronic flooding at the intersection of Astor Road and Chamberlain Way. The proposal includes construction of a drainage basin, a catch basin and underground piping to redirect stormwater, restriping the intersection and installing solar‑powered LED stop signs to improve nighttime visibility. The application will be submitted this week with award notifications expected in late April, City Manager said.

He also described planned resurfacing and rehabilitation work: Seneca Road (two‑mile stretch), Auburn Road, and Air Expressway from Highway 395 to Koala (each described as roughly two miles) with anticipated completion by the end of summer 2026. Park improvements highlighted recent exterior painting at the senior and community centers and equipment upgrades at Richardson Park, along with a plan to replace wood chips with safer rubber surfacing and add/replace park awnings and receptacles.

The council applauded the work and asked staff to follow up on grant status and to provide measurements for dugout improvements requested by a councilmember.

Next steps: City staff will present the water/wastewater contractor update in March and follow up with council on grant application status and park improvement timelines.
