Summary
Committee members outlined CERT training options for spring and summer, reported near-complete storm-drain mapping that will be published in Heights Life, and heard the fire chief offer short trainings and a May Fire Service Day to engage residents.
La Habra Heights Emergency Preparedness Committee members reviewed several preparedness efforts during their Feb. 19 meeting, including CERT training opportunities, storm-drain mapping and planned public engagement at Fire Service Day.
Member Villa Gomez summarized upcoming CERT options: a tentative multi-city exercise coordinated by La Mirada and Los Angeles County Fire on May 30, a Norwalk CERT class (March 13–15, currently full with a waiting list), weeknight training options April 20–22 and April 27–30 (6–9 p.m.), and the National CERT conference planned for Aug. 24–29 in Irvine.
"Please just present that so that we can get ourselves coordinated and represented," Villa Gomez said, urging residents to register or join waiting lists. Members agreed to post training dates on the Harbor Heights/La Habra Heights Facebook page.
John Dominguez reported the storm-drain mapping project is nearly finished but requires verification between two data sources; he said the Heights Life editor plans to publish a storm-drain map and a two-page spread of evacuation routes and that high-resolution files will be available upon request.
Fire Chief Martin offered department support for brief, targeted training in home safety, CPR, first aid and home-hardening practices and described plans for a public Fire Service Day in May to allow families to see equipment and learn safety basics. Members volunteered properties and dates for walk-throughs and follow-up training sessions.
Committee members asked staff to coordinate dates and to circulate outreach materials; the committee plans a public education event the fourth Saturday in March and will work with the city to piggyback on the City of La Habra’s Love La Habra program if scheduling allows.
