Brent Baum, battalion chief with Heartland Fire and Rescue, urged residents to prepare now by assembling a 14-day emergency kit that can be grabbed quickly in the event of an evacuation. He recommended packing a gallon of water per person per day, nonperishable food, first-aid supplies, personal hygiene items such as toothpaste and a toothbrush, and copies of important documents. Baum suggested including pet supplies and comfort items such as books or toys for children and advised labeling purchase dates on food and writing contents on cans in case labels fall off. He recommended a backpack for ease of carrying or a wheeled cooler for storage and portability and said a solar-powered or hand-crank radio can help keep families informed. Baum concluded by directing listeners to Heartland Fire and Rescue’s website for more information.
