Summary
City planning staff and consultants will host a community kickoff for a Coastal Commission‑funded Resilient Coast Monterey sea level rise vulnerability assessment on April 22; the commission designated three representatives to attend and staff will brief the full commission on April 28.
City planning staff announced an April 22 community engagement event to kick off the Resilient Coast Monterey sea level rise vulnerability assessment and adaptation planning effort and asked the Planning Commission to designate up to three commissioners to represent the body at the interactive event.
Kim Cole, community development director, said the city received a grant from the Coastal Commission and has been working with consultant GHD. "We're ready to involve and embark upon our community engagement piece of this process," she said, and described the April 22 event as an interactive, non‑televised kickoff at the Monterey Conference Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Staff asked the commission to limit in‑person representation to three members to avoid creating a Brown Act meeting. Staff proposed designating Commissioner Freeman, Chair Silva and Vice Chair Latasa with Commissioner Bluth as an alternate; commissioners agreed to hold a spot for a commissioner who may be available but is not present tonight and to receive a full debrief at the April 28 commission meeting.
The event will be an initial opportunity for residents to learn about sea level rise vulnerabilities for Monterey, the project timeline and the adaptation planning process; staff said the outreach will inform later planning work.
